Ozark Regional Transit recently hosted a conference with students from Helen Tyson Middle School, providing insight into ORT’s services and operations while exploring innovative ways to connect the community to its local history.

The students presented a creative project concept for America 250, to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States in 2026. The students proposed their project idea, “Mapping NWA History Through Transit” which would create an interactive digital map highlighting historical and cultural landmarks across Northwest Arkansas which are also in proximity to ORT bus routes. Riders will be able to access the map via QR codes on bus interiors as well as at bus stops. The goal is to offer an onsite, educational experience while engaging in the region’s rich history.

The project builds on Helen Tyson Middle School’s long-standing partnership with the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History and plans are to also collaborate with the Rogers Historical Museum and the Washington County Historical Society.

“Partnering with students to share local history through transit is a perfect example of how ORT connects people not only to destinations, but to the stories that define our community,” said Joel Gardner, Executive Director of ORT. “We are thrilled to support these young creators as they bring NWA’s history to riders in a new, accessible way.”

Students will continue refining their project in collaboration with ORT, with support for promotion and public engagement once the digital map is completed. The initiative highlights the power of student-led programming to foster civic awareness, community pride, and cross-generational learning.

Ozark Regional Transit is pleased to be a part of this joint venture.
